Gwinnett FIRST

Here we go, our home field, the Infinite Energy Arena!

If you want to attend this event, you need to fill out fewer forms than Dalton!  I just need the Emergency Contact form, then you need to get the other Permission form (the one the teachers sign).

You will miss school on Friday, 3/30, the day before Spring Break, so make sure all of your work is done before that.

See me for the teacher Permission form.  If you wanted to order a competition shirt, but didn't, see me.  We might order another batch.

See below for the Emergency Contact Form:

Week 1

posted Jan 9, 2018, 10:14 AM by Michael Reilly   [ updated Jan 10, 2018, 4:56 AM ]

Kickoff Day was cool, and we're now underway!

See our Resources page for documents related to the contest.

We will meet Wednesday to finalize design decisions, and then we need teams to form for each component.  Right now, we have a gear plopper, a climber, and the base.  We also have coders, and we need a Spirit Design Team (shirts, style, etc.), and a Chairman's Award team.

Starting next week, we can also meet Mondays.  Next weekend is Hackathon, so some folks will be doing apps, some will be working on 'bots!

Kickoff 2018

posted Dec 9, 2017, 2:03 PM by Michael Reilly   [ updated Jan 4, 2018, 1:07 PM ]

Here it comes!!  On Jan. 6, we find out the contest for 2018!!!

We are going to have a great time discovering our challenge, and I've never been more excited about a team's potential than I am this year.

Here's the info:
  • I am bringing 2 or 3 students with me to get "the stuff" at Georgia Tech.  We will watch the kickoff down there.  Students going with me need the forms linked near the bottom of this page:

  • We will open up 728 at Lanier for the rest of our team to get together and watch the kickoff together.

  • WRITE DOWN THE DECRYPTION CODE!  Encrypted rules and more are attached at the bottom of this page.

  • We will get some pizza for lunch, and immerse ourselves in the rules, regulations, and more, to develop our strategy.  Others will develop a lumber list so we can build some field parts as soon as possible for prototype development.  It's all about brainstorming, sharing, LISTENING, and more than anything else, KNOWING THE RULES OF THE GAME.

For those who want to watch the kickoff but can't be there in person, here's the link that will broadcast it, starting at 10:30:

2018 Safety Animation Award sponsored by UL

posted Nov 3, 2017, 6:54 AM by FIRST Robotics   [ updated Nov 3, 2017, 6:55 AM ]

Details on the 2018 Safety Animation Award sponsored by UL have just been released

Get creative and help your fellow teams stay safe by submitting an animation for the competition! The submission portal opens on November 9th and closes on December 7th, so get cracking! It’s going to be a fun one this year as FIRST Robotics Competition and UL ask teams to create an animation in the style of an arcade video game. The winning entry will get shown at official FRC events. All the details are in the link above.

We know how creative our team can be, so let’s see it!

Thanks to all for hanging out with robotics this first month, especially our beginners!

We hope you enjoyed building so far, and there's lots more to come.  In October we will be playing in our first tournament, using last year's robot and game.
Here's that tournament info:   It's on a weekend, sorry!

Also, in a few weeks we will also start to use the "Remind" for the team. LHSFRCTeam is our Remind. Anyone can subscribe, but there will be some irrelevant things to non-team members. To sign up, send a text with the message @a8abd to the number 81010. If you’re having trouble with 81010, try texting @a8abd to (678) 802-8621.
You can also go online to and subscribe.

Please REGISTER with FIRST robotics.  It's free, and online.  Your parents will need to verify via their email.  Go to
We need this for tournaments, and you need it for scholarships, etc.  Your team is 4509, the "Mechanical Bulls" of Lanier High.

Finally, share what you're doing with working folks like relatives, etc.  They might have companies to donate parts, cash or time, and we welcome parent support!

PS - If you're looking to see another cool team, check out this site!

First FIRST Robotics Meeting is Wed, Aug. 9

posted Jul 27, 2017, 3:50 AM by Michael Reilly   [ updated Jul 27, 2017, 5:29 AM ]

In room 728, after school, until about 4, we will have our first FIRST Robotics meeting.  We need to see who is interested in what, and who might want a leadership position.

For new folks, you are our priority!  Beginners are the reason for what we do!

First goal is to promote the group:  posters, t-shirts, etc.  In addition, we will discuss fundraising, training and other topics.

This is exciting, here we go again!!  If you miss this week, be sure to show up next week!
